Whitney had been worried about sitting in the same car as Charles, but her worry was unnecessary since he did not

even think about fetching her along.

Whitney sighed as she looked at Charles’ car which was already completely out of sight. She realized she should

have known her place better.

When Charles was in a good mood, he could tolerate her being herself and speaking freely.

However, once she crossed the line, she meant nothing to him, and he would have no qualms about punishing her

for her wrongdoings.

The realization hit Whitney like a ton of bricks, but she quickly dispelled those thoughts. She was resolved to earn

money to bring her mother to Salinsburgh in Chanaea so that they could live together peacefully and comfortably.

She took out her phone, intending to book a taxi to the office.

Jasmine had finished her breakfast and was about to leave the house when she saw Whitney standing by the road

in the far distance.

“Whitney, why are you standing here alone? Where’s Charles?”

Whitney jumped at the sudden voice behind her.

Feeling embarrassed, she smiled awkwardly. “He has something urgent at the laboratory today. Since it’s not on the

way, I told him I’ll go to work myself.”

“This entire district belongs to the Newton family, so I don’t think you can get a taxi here. Why don’t I give you a

lift?”

Hearing Jasmine’s words, Whitney could only agree helplessly. “All right, then. So sorry to trouble you, Jasmine.”

“Not at all. I have nothing important anyway. I’m just going to meet a friend, and she won’t mind if I’m a few

minutes late.”

On the way to the office, Whitney felt more determined than ever to earn money.

Once I get my first paycheck, I’ll learn to drive and get my license! Then, I’ll buy a car so that I need not beg

Charles to take me out of the house.

Throughout the ride, Jasmine asked several questions. She was trying to find out if they were fighting and wanted to

be a peacemaker.

Whitney did not say anything else other than the reason she had given earlier. Realizing she would not reveal

anything, Jasmine left it at that.

Whitney reached the office and began to work. Yesterday’s rat incident made her famous within the logistics

department for her fearless way of catching rats. Even those female co-workers who disliked her dared not openly

display their displeasure.

Whitney spent the morning working in peace.

Lana was touching up her makeup at her desk during lunch break when a few close female co-workers began to

surround her.

“Is it true that you met Mr. Newton again at the parking lot after work yesterday?”

“My goodness. You’re so lucky, Lana. It’s almost impossible for us to see him in person, yet you keep bumping into

him.”

“Lana, have you exchanged words with Mr. Newton already?”

A group of nosy co-workers surrounded her with envious expressions. They never imagined someone from their

logistics department would have a chance to get close to Charles.

The logistics department was considered the lowest form of life in the company and rarely received attention. The

annual town hall event was the only opportunity the staff had to see Charles from far away in a large conference

hall.

Lana was the envy of many in the logistics department, for she had a few chance encounters with Charles.

The chatter of her co-workers was loud enough for Whitney to hear.

She turned her head and glanced over, feeling slightly disheartened.

So, the female co-worker Charles met at the parking lot yesterday afternoon was Lana. He openly criticized Lana

and me before, so he should have known who she was. Why did he pretend not to know her name?

At that moment, Lana turned over and saw the frown on Whitney’s face.

Seeing that, Lana deliberately spoke louder. “Of course, we had a conversation. Mr. Newton’s limited edition luxury

car was parked right beside mine. For some reason, my engine stalled, and I couldn’t start it. Mr. Newton saw my

predicament and came over to offer help.”

“Wow!” the group of female co-workers exclaimed with envy.

Fueled by her co-workers’ reactions, Lana continued, “He’s not as cold as what others said. He’s quite easygoing

and speaks gently.”

She lowered her head, appearing slightly nervous as a light blush filled her face.

Her story sounded so convincing that even Lana herself believed it was true. She had forgotten the reality that had

occurred yesterday.

A curious female co-worker immediately asked, “Lana, is it possible that Mr. Newton likes you?”

“Exactly. Does Mr. Newton have a crush on you?” another co-worker chirped. “I heard our colleagues at the finance

department meet Mr. Newton frequently. According to them, Mr. Newton is usually cold and distant. Even they don’t

get to talk to him much. Yet, he initiated to help you with your car and spoke to you gently. He seems to be treating

you specially.”

Lana felt embarrassed at her co-workers’ words. “I’m not the prettiest in the company, so how could Mr. Newton

like me? Perhaps he was in a good mood yesterday and talked more.”

“How about that time you met him in the elevator? It was his first visit to the logistics department, but he

specifically asked for you. He didn’t come to inspect the logistics department just for you, did he?”

Lana’s face turned redder. “Um, that might be possible. Anyway, I can’t comment much. It’s not up to me to

decide.”

Suddenly, a female co-worker interrupted the conversation, “Didn’t Mr. Newton also ask for Whitney when he came

that day? Moreover, he talked to her more and…”

Lana’s face instantly fell.

The group then turned their gaze to Whitney.

Whitney had been eavesdropping and was caught off guard.

Lana snorted. “Since you’re so eager to know, why don’t you come over and listen? Don’t sit there and eavesdrop

like a coward. Whitney, I know Isaac’s your backer. Don’t tell me you’re afraid of me being together with Mr.

Newton and telling him stories of you and causing you to be fired?”

Whitney organized the files on her desk and replied indifferently, “I’m not afraid. If you truly have the ability, make

Mr. Newton marry you.”

Lana became furious. “Are you mocking me? What right do you have to be so arrogant? So what if Isaac was your

old flame? Looks like he hasn’t come to see you for the past few days. You offended me, so you’re scared of me

getting together with Mr. Newton.”

Whitney stopped responding.

She found no point in talking to a person who lacked intelligence.

Forget it. Let her live in her own imaginative world.

Whitney knew Charles had someone else in his heart—Gwendolyn. She did not care about Lana’s provocation.

Charles will never fall for Lana.

Lane became angrier at Whitney’s non-responsiveness. It was as if she did not respect her at all.

The rest of the co-workers hurriedly comforted her.

“Forget about it, Lana. Don’t waste your time with her. She most probably can’t even pass her three-month

probation. Isaac is only an executive assistant. He can’t influence any HR decisions.”

“That’s right. She’s jealous of you, Lana. You remembered how hard she was trying to get into Mr. Newton’s favor

when he came that day? In the end, she was scolded by him. She must be p*ssed off now that Mr. Newton laid his

eyes on you.”

Whitney furrowed her brows, disgusted by how ridiculous their conversation was heading. She put on her

headphones, raised the volume, and rested her head on the desk, cutting herself from the outside world.
