Boyd paused mid-stride. “What?”

“Didn’t Serana tell you anything?”

Boyd stared at her for a long moment, a faint smile playing on his lips. “What words of

hers are so important to you?”

Yasmine’s cheeks flushed with a touch of anger. “Whatever she said that matters to you,

that’s exactly what I’m curious about.”

Boyd’s expression remained cool. “On the contrary, that doesn’t bother me in the

slightest.”

Yasmine was at a loss for words. “If you won’t tell me, it means you definitely don’t want

me to know, and if you don’t want me to know, then I guess I’m meant to be kept in the

dark.”d2

Yasmine pursed her lips, mulling over her thoughts for a moment. “You can’t give me what

I really want. I care about those things, sure, but if you can’t satisfy that, it doesn’t really

matter.”

Boyd shook his head, not uttering a word. He had said the same thing too many times.

There was nothing he could do about the one thing she truly desired.

“Boyd, if I said I’ve let you go, and I don’t hate you anymore, would you believe me?”

She fell silent for a while, then looked up at Boyd’s face. However, there was no surprise,

shock, or joy on his face, just a sparse smile after hearing her words.

“I don’t believe you. How could you not hate me? Saying this is just your way of telling me

not to make amends and then letting you go, right? It’s right for you to hate me. It makes

me feel slightly better inside.”

His punishment deserved to be her hatred. It was the best he could ask for.

Yasmine clenched her teeth, her hands tightly clasped together. A sudden, inexplicable

sorrow started to weigh on her heart.

“So what do you really want?” She truly didn’t know what to do anymore.

His obsessive refusal to let her go. His desire to entangle her for a lifetime, yet pushing

her to hate him. What was this, really?

How could this toxic relationship ever come to an end?

“Just let it be. You do things that make you happy every day, and occasionally entertain

me. That’s for the best,” he said.

Yasmine closed her eyes, taking a deep breath. The two of them were trapped in a cage of

thorns. Any struggle would leave them both scarred.

She slowly stood up, tossing her shawl onto the bed and headed toward the bathroom.

“Boyd, don’t push me.”

The sorrow in Boyd’s eyes seemed innate. He had no choice but to push her now.

The next day, Yasmine had no plans to visit Greenfield Village. Herschel had arrived early

in the morning, bringing two strangers with him.

After she finished watering the plants, she returned to the house to find an uproar

upstairs. She listened carefully for a while but could only make out Boyd’s stern voice

demanding someone to leave.

Turning to the pale-faced maid beside her, she asked, “What happened?”

The maid shook her head. “I… I’m not sure. But Mr. Boyd seems to dislike doctors.”

Doctors? Yasmine’s eyes flickered with understanding.

Boyd caused quite a scene, and Herschel could only come out of the study with two

shrinks. All of them looked a bit disheveled.

Herschel’s cheek was swollen.

Yasmine emerged from the bedroom just in time to run into him. He looked at her,

impeccably dressed, every hair in place. “Where are you off to?”

“I have a lunch date.”

“With whom?”

Yasmine’s brow twitched. “A stranger.”

Herschel narrowed his eyes. “Ms. Yasmine, I know you do as you please. Whether you

forgive or not, and how the two of you decide to live most comfortably is up to you. You

have him in your heart, and you know how he feels about you, so why push both of you

into a dead end? Are you really willing to waste time like this?”

“Why should I forgive someone who made a mistake and hurt me? I also think it’s a waste

of time. Instead of berating me here, trying to persuade me to let go of the past, why not

convince him to let me go?”

Herschel rubbed his temples with two fingers. “Frankly, if it were me, knowing Ms. Chloe

might be your daughter with him, I would have come back to fight for custody, and you

wouldn’t have had to spend all those years comfortably with the Summers family.”

Yasmine’s expression darkened sharply.

But Herschel pressed on, “What would the Summers family think if they knew you had

deceived them? What dignity would you have left in P City if the truth came out? If it

weren’t for the fear that his return might make you think he’s fighting for custody, if it

weren’t for the fear of you hating him even more, do you think your daughter would have

her life today? Married to Damon, with two children?”

“A single thought can change the outcome of a situation, just like when he chose to shoot

you to save both of you. And because of that thought, you lost a baby. So, if you hadn’t

chosen to hide your pregnancy from him, things might have turned out differently.

“If you hadn’t lost the baby, would you choose to forgive him? I think not. But what do you

really want? Did you want him to choose to shoot another woman who he knew had a

heart condition and was pregnant?”

Yasmine’s face turned pale, and her body was trembling slightly. She looked up at

Herschel, “So, holding onto the past is my fault, and his choice is the correct one. I am the

one who is ungrateful…? Is that what you mean?”

“Did he ask you to forgive him?” Herschel interrupted him, “In his current state, do you

think he has forgiven himself? He has no correct choice.”

Yasmine’s body stiffened abruptly.

“If you were in his position at that time, what would you choose? Would you choose to

sacrifice Serana’s life and live the life you think is happy? Or, like him, choose to hurt you?

Of these two choices, which one is correct?

“I’m in no position to judge you. You’ve been through the wringer with this whole mess,

and if you want to be bitter or angry, you’ve got every right. But honestly… this whole

grudge match? It’s just pointless. You’re not only refusing to let each other off the hook,

but you’re not giving yourselves a break either. There’s no past so dark that you can’t

move beyond it, and if you really want to be together, there’s just no time to waste on

whatever went down. I mean, how many good years do you two even have left?”

Yasmine’s eyes flickered with emotion.

Herschel took a deep breath, having just delivered what was perhaps the most heartfelt

and lengthy speech of his life. “That’s all I’ve got. If I’m out of line, I apologize. I won’t

bring it up again.”

With that, he left the villa.

Yasmine stood there for a long time, trying to walk over to the couch, her legs almost

giving way Herscheleath her. Steadying herself on the armrest, she slowly sank down onto

the cushions. Her head buzzed, her chest felt tight.

There were certain things that she had indeed considered back then, but after the

miscarriage, all her grief had turned into a weapon of revenge against Boyd, sharp and

relentless. Now that someone else had spelled it out, it seemed she was the one who was

utterly in the wrong.

Boyd, always one with a laundry list of excuses.

She didn’t know how long she sat there until Boyd came down from the upstairs study, his

presence commanding as ever. He rushed over when he saw her state. “What’s wrong?

Are you feeling okay?”

Yasmine looked up at him. He still had a handsome and elegant appearance, carrying

various marks left by the passage of time.

She remembered just now overhearing him and Herschel upstairs. Now he looked as

dapper as if all that had been her imagination. She brushed off his hand and stood up

slowly, “I’ve got a lunch date, gonna head out.”

Boyd reached out to her, “I’ll drive you.”

“No need, the driver’s here.”

“I’m taking you!” Boyd insisted.

Yasmine didn’t respond. He followed her out anyway.

Yasmine was heading to a diner, known for its retro charm.

Boyd got out first to open the car door for her.

“I don’t know when I’ll be done, but it might take a while. If you don’t want to wait, feel

free to head back or wander around, whatever you like.”

He glanced at the diner’s vintage sign and pursed his lips, “Who are you meeting?”

Yasmine, expressionless, turned toward the diner, dropping words over her shoulder. “No

idea.”

But Boyd silently followed anyway.Books Chapters Are Daily Updated Join & Stay Updated

Yasmine went upstairs to the diner’s lounge and greeted another man with a casual nod.

“Sorry I’m late.”

The man stood up, dressed in a suit and leather shoes, his figure tall and straight. He was

about the same age as them, with an elegant demeanor and a clean, handsome face.

“It’s fine, have a seat.” He smiled warmly, pulling out a chair for Yasmine.

“Thanks.”

They began to order their meal.

Boyd stood by the door, his hands clenched into fists. A waitress approached, puzzled by

his presence.

He stood, face taut, before finally leaving the diner. Outside, he fumbled for a cigarette

from his coat pocket. His hands, holding the lighter, trembled noticeably as he struggled

to light his smoke.

He drew a long, forceful drag. The exhaled smoke blurred his face, the tall figure in his

navy trench coat looking stark and stern against the chill wind.

Yasmine, looking down through the window, could only see the top of his head and his

stature, his expression hidden from her view. She withdrew her gaze, responding to the

man’s questions with a detached air.

The man Damon introduced had impeccable manners, and there was nothing to fault in

his demeanor and conversation.

Yasmine had spoken little, but by the time the meal was over, the man’s words already

hinted at arranging another meeting.

Yasmine didn’t refuse. However, she did decline his offer to drive her home.

Boyd stood by the car, watching them descend side by side, his facial muscles twitching in

restraint. As Yasmine approached, he opened the car door for her, but the man placed his

hand above the door, the other on Yasmine’s arm, protecting her as she got into the car.
