“Hey, did you hear? Boyd just up and slapped Serana right across the face.”

Serana got slapped by Boyd? Curiosity was a natural instinct, and Yasmine had her share of it.

Especially knowing Boyd as she did, the idea of him raising his hand to anyone seemed pretty wild. Let

alone to a woman, and not just any woman, but Serana, the girl he usually doted on.

“No way, Boyd hitting someone?”

“For real, I saw it with my own eyes. Right there by the south gate of campus, Boyd drove his car up

and barely exchanged two words with Serana before he slapped her. You should’ve seen his face—it

was terrifying.”

The person shook their head, shivering at the memory, “He didn’t even look that mad when he broke up

with Yasmine.”

“Pfft, who would dare give Yasmine the cold shoulder? Even Boyd wouldn’t have the guts to lay a finger

on her.”d2

“True that.”

They murmured among themselves, their voices low, but Yasmine caught every word meant for her

ears.

So, it seemed the story was legit. However, as curious as she was, she had no standing to walk up and

demand the details.

Others had approached her out of curiosity, but she had nothing to share. Maybe Boyd would

eventually take it upon himself to tell her what happened.

It looked like she was a bit too hopeful though. The guy who, no matter how much she gave him a hard

time, would stick to her side whenever he had a moment to spare, hadn’t shown his face all day. Even

after a week, he hadn’t appeared before her.

Inside, she felt a mix of emotions, but she couldn’t let them get the best of her now.

She didn’t have much of a plan about graduation or job prospects. At most, she’d help out Bryson, but

she knew he wouldn’t have her do much. He’d probably rather have her as a decorative figurehead in

some cushy chair.

She didn’t have any grand ambitions at the moment. Compared to the hustle and bustle of others, her

life seemed to belong to a different world. Eating, drinking, reading a bit, and shooing Boyd away. Now,

with one piece suddenly missing from her routine, she felt oddly out of sync.

Derek had gotten into the business ahead of her, helping Bryson with the workload, and was swamped.

He came back every day looking disheveled, as if he had been on the front lines fighting enemies all

day.

Every time he saw Yasmine leisurely at home, he felt a bit resentful. “You don’t plan on staying like this

forever, do you?”

Yasmine sprawled on the couch, “What, got tired of me freeloading after just a few days of work?”

Derek surrendered with his hands up. “But what’s up with you? You’ve been looking lethargic lately.

You used to be so driven, and now you’re content just bumming around the house?”

Yasmine smiled, “Maybe you just don’t know me well enough.”

Derek scoffed, “And Boyd? Haven’t seen him sticking to you like glue lately?”

Yasmine, who had been picking at a fruit platter on her lap, seemed disinterested in the topic, idly

nibbling on the assortment.

After a day’s exhaustion, Derek didn’t press further, accustomed as he was to Yasmine’s attitude when

it came to Boyd. “Forget it, I’m off to change. You’re not heading to school tomorrow?”

“No. Got an appointment.”

Derek paused, then chuckled, “Besides Boyd, who else would you have plans with?”

Yasmine gave him a lazy glance. Derek just grinned and quickly left the scene.

After dinner, Derek thought he wouldn’t see Yasmine for another twenty-four hours. She had a

reputation for being lazy—bad at everything except for eating, sleeping, and doing nothing. She was

definitely a champion at that.

Lately, she hadn’t been seen at breakfast. But the next morning, he was surprised to see her step out

the door, fully dressed and ready to go.

He was genuinely baffled, “Oh my god, is this really happening? You waking up so early?”

Knowing he was teasing her, Yasmine shot him a glance and headed out with her car keys in hand.

“Hey, where you off to? Skipping breakfast?”

“Got a date. Eating out.”

Bryson didn’t pry into her affairs, and when he saw her leave, he didn’t say much.

Yasmine’s car eventually pulled up to P City Hospital. Though it was a city landmark, its medical

standards and equipment couldn’t quite match those of Summit Ridge University’s affiliated hospital.

She chose P City Hospital to avoid bumping into familiar faces.

Parking her car in the underground lot, she rode the elevator up, arriving just in time, with a bit of a wait

ahead.

Running her fingers through her hair, Yasmine looked at the reflection in the elevator mirror, chuckled,

and gently placed her hand on her belly, giving it a soft pat.

Her period was late last month, and she had a hunch something was off. She waited a few days before

checking, and the results were as expected. There was indeed a little life beginning inside her.

To keep up with the check-up schedule, it had been half a month since her last visit.

She hadn’t told Boyd the news yet, feeling he didn’t deserve this particular surprise. She had heard

very little about Serana lately. It seemed Boyd had chosen her over Serana after all.

She might not have been fair to Serana, but she figured any woman wouldn’t allow someone like

Serana around.

Aside from his issues with Serana, Boyd had other redeeming qualities, and his recent clinginess

seemed to confirm that persistence alway paid off. Her grudge against him was fading.

She had thought about finding the right moment to tell him, perhaps even having him accompany her to

this check-up, but then Serana popped up again, and Boyd had been absent for over a week.

She missed her chance, but he couldn’t blame her for it. Still, this news was something she eventually

had to share with him. After a moment’s hesitation, she decided to swallow her pride and make the first

move to call him.

The phone rang for a good ten seconds before being answered. “Yasmine?”

Boyd’s voice was tinged with surprise.

Twirling her hair around her finger, Yasmine managed a somewhat awkward “Hmm.” “Are you busy

right now? I need to talk to you. Can we meet?”

There was a pause on Boyd’s end. “Right now?”

“Yeah.”

“Is it urgent?”

Her expression darkened. “Do I need an urgent matter to see you? Just a simple answer, do you have

the time or not? If not, forget it.”

It took Boyd a moment before he responded, “I’ll come to you shortly.”

Yasmine hung up without another word. Once or twice, unexpected things might happen, but not thrice

or four times. It seemed that Boyd would miss his chance to discover this surprise.

Stepping out of the elevator on the ground floor, she had to pass through the main lobby to reach the

obstetrics and gynecology department.

Tossing her phone into her bag, she scanned the lobby for directions, then headed straight to the

department. But just as she entered the obstetrics area, she stopped dead in her tracks.

The morning crowd was there for check-ups, but she spotted him immediately—a distinguished figure

among them, expressionless, holding a document. Beside him was a frail-looking woman in a hospital

gown.

She knew them both all too well.

The man was Boyd, the very person who had just told her he was too tied up to meet her immediately.

The woman was Serana, whom Boyd had publicly slapped at school not so long ago.

Her gaze briefly swept over the door they had just exited. Suddenly, Yasmine felt that despite

everything, she hadn’t lived in vain. Even this kind of melodramatic thing had to rain down on her.

Boyd, sensing her gaze, looked up with a frown. When his eyes met Yasmine’s, his expression

stiffened. He glanced at Serana, his expression growing even more severe, and then he strode towards

Yasmine.

Frowning, he grabbed her arm and looked her up and down. “What are you doing here? Are you feeling

unwell?”

Yasmine didn’t answer. Instead, she calmly pulled the report from his hand. Boyd was caught off-guard

by her action.

A quick glance revealed it was a pregnancy report with Serana’s name on it. She didn’t bother to read

the rest. She wasn’t a specialist, and it wouldn’t make much sense to her.

But this was enough.

Handing the report back to Boyd, she turned to Serana, whose face had turned even paler, and smiled,

“Pregnant, huh?”

Serana bit her lip. She looked at Boyd, then cast her eyes down.

Yasmine chuckled, “I heard about the slap at school and thought something serious had happened.

Turns out, it was because of this.”

Boyd pulled her closer. “What’s wrong with you? Why are you…” He paused, his gaze dropping to

Yasmine’s belly, then looked up at her with surprise. “The call you made to me earlier was…”

“I heard you were here with a woman for a prenatal checkup, got curious and came to have a look.”

Yasmine raised her voice, interrupting him, and shattering any hope that might have lingered in his

eyes.

Hope? What right did he have to it?

“How far along?” she asked again, and when Serana remained silent, she turned to Boyd.

He pressed his lips together, “Forty days.”

Yasmine nodded, as if she understood. “Whose is it?”

Boyd didn’t answer.

Suddenly, Serana rushed over, her voice tinged with agitation, “It’s not what you think. It’s not Boyd’s.”

Yasmine’s expression remained indifferent. “Then whose is it?”

Serana’s face lost even more color. “I… I don’t know. It’s definitely not Boyd’s.”

Yasmine watched Serana intently, but Boyd stepped in to shield Serana behind him.

Yasmine smiled again.

Whispers and curious glances surrounded them. The tension was palpable even to the bystanders.

After a long silence, Yasmine repeated her question, “The answer you just gave seems a bit evasive.

Whose child is it in your belly?”

As Serana was about to shake her head, Yasmine continued, “Doesn’t it seem ridiculous that you don’t

know that answer? How slutty are you at such a young age that you can’t even figure out whose baby

you’re carrying?”

Serana bit her lip again, her gaze fixed on Boyd, appearing hesitant, timid, and fearful, as if she had

something to say but was holding back.

Yasmine laughed. So, that was her answer.

The onlookers murmured among themselves as Boyd took Yasmine’s hand. “Let’s talk somewhere less

crowded.”

Yasmine pulled her hand away, stepping back and raising her hand to prevent him from coming closer.

“If she says she doesn’t know who the father is, let me ask in a different way. Could the child be

yours?”

A frost seemed to settle in Boyd’s eyes. “What are you talking about…”

“Boyd, I…” Serana’s voice broke through, sounding strained.

Yasmine turned to look, just as Serana clutched her chest and crumpled to the ground. Boyd, right

beside her, caught her in his arms before she hit the floor.

Chaos ensued around them. Gasps and murmurs filled the air.

Yasmine watched as Boyd, with evident concern, scooped up Serana without hesitation and quickly left

the scene. His hurried steps seemed almost frantic to her.

Rooted to the spot, she couldn’t move, feeling nothing but a cold numbness throughout her body.

The onlookers witnessed the man carrying the woman away. When they looked back at Yasmine, who

stood in place with a somewhat pale complexion, each of them couldn’t conceal the pity in their eyes.

A kindly older woman even felt compelled to offer words of comfort. “Darlin’, try to see the bright side.

That man made his choice. No use cryin’ over someone like him. There are plenty more fish in the sea,

you know?”

“Looks like his lady’s got a bun in the oven, doesn’t she? He’s all wrapped up in her, taking her to her

prenatal check-ups and all. If he’s that worried about her, nothing you do is gonna bring him back. Best

to move on, sweetheart. You’ve got your whole life ahead of you.”

“Good gracious, such a handsome fella, and yet he’s such a jerk.”

Yasmine, for the most part, didn’t react. The onlookers, sensing her disinterest, eventually stopped

trying to engage. It wasn’t until a nurse stepped out of the office and called out “Yasmine” that she

showed any reaction.

As she calmly walked into the examination room next door, the waiting area buzzed with murmurs.

What an unexpected turn of events.
