Chapter 149

“Serves you right!” Bailey scoffed.

Despite saying that, she sprang up from the bed posthaste. When her gaze alighted on the door, she

froze imperceptibly.

“W-When did you arrive, E-Edmund?”

Upon hearing that, Artemis instinctively turned and cast his gaze over. Right away, he spotted Edmund

standing at the door with a fruit basket in hand.

It was the first time he had ever seen that cousin of his wearing such a cold and indifferent expression.

As far as he remembered, Edmund had always been gentle and courteous. No matter how furious he

was, he wouldn't show it on his face. However, at that moment, he was an entirely different person.

“You're here, Edmund! Why are you standing by the door? Come in and have a seat.”

Snapping out of her shock, Bailey strode over to Edmund. She opened her mouth, but she didn't know

what to say.

I must look a mess right now with my lips ravaged by that scoundrel, Artemis! Consequently, I definitely

appear wretched in his eyes. Otherwise, he wouldn't be wearing such a dark look. In fact, this is the

first time I've ever seen him with such a frosty and apathetic expression.

“Edmund, I—”

Before she could finish speaking, Edmund suddenly put the indifference on his face away. Reverting to

his usual gentle and casual demeanor, he remarked smilingly, “I heard from Dwayne that you were

gravely injured, the knife piercing through almost half of your back, Artemis. I was restless at home, so

I came over to pay you a visit.”

After saying that, he circled around her and headed to the side of the bed.

When he saw the blood-stained bandage on Artemis' back, he couldn't help arching a brow and

commenting, “Your injury is indeed pretty serious. No wonder Bay put up with you. A doctor regards her

patients the same, no matter their gender. I understand that.”

At that, Bailey breathed a sigh of relief. In truth, she could sense the hostility emanating from the man.

However, he didn't want to embarrass her. Thus, he downplayed things without mentioning a word

about everything that transpired a second ago.

Conversely, Artemis snorted. Admittedly, I'm not as magnanimous as him. If anyone dares to touch the

woman I love, sorry to say, but I'll send him to meet his maker directly.

“There's a couch over there. Help yourself and take a seat.”

Flashing him a faint smile, Edmund placed the fruit basket in his hand on the bedside table and

murmured warmly, “There's still much to handle at the Chivers residence, so I'll be leaving. Take care,

Artemis.”

Artemis narrowed his eyes a fraction. Without waiting for a response from him, Edmund spun on his

heel and walked toward the door.

When he walked past Bailey, he halted in his tracks and stated in a lowered voice, “I didn't take it to

heart. He's a patient, so it's only natural that you put up with him. There's no need to be so nervous.”

Bailey stared at him for a long moment. Out of the blue, a smile bloomed on her face. “There's never

any pressure when I speak to you. You're the person who understands me best in this world, Edmund!”

Reaching out, Edmund patted her on the shoulder as he urged gently, “Rest earlier after you've sorted

Artemis out. Don't overtax yourself. After all, you've got to perform my grandfather's craniotomy

personally.”

The smile on Bailey's face brightened all the more. She looked like an eighteen-year-old maiden, her

smile pure and unsullied.

“Don't worry. That has always been on my mind. I'll make sure everything goes as scheduled.”

Edmund then gave her a few more words of advice before leaving the room.

Bailey watched as his figure disappeared at the end of the corridor, spacing out for a long moment.

At the sight of that, Artemis grew jealous again. He drawled sarcastically, “Since you're so reluctant to

part with him, go back to the Chivers residence with him. Why are you staying here?”

Bailey lifted her hand and touched her forehead. Then, she pivoted and walked to the side of the bed.

Not in the mood to bicker with him, she bent down and tore the bandage off. The agony was so

excruciating that Artemis howled in pain.

D*mn it, what a black-hearted woman! She was all affectionate with Edmund a while ago, but in the

blink of an eye, she became so rough and savage!

Bailey ripped off all the bandages from his back in one go. When she saw that the sutures at the center

of his back had reopened, she clenched her jaw so hard that it creaked.

It looks like I've got to teach him a lesson. Otherwise, he wouldn't learn and would go even further the

next time.

“Stay still on your stomach, or I'm not going to stop your bleeding and suture the wound. Instead, I'd

merely watch as you go into shock and die from losing too much blood.”

At that, the corners of Artemis' mouth twitched.

She's really horrifying when she's ruthless!

Bailey reached out and snagged the nearby medical kit. After opening it and taking out the needle and

thread, she made to begin just like that.

As soon as Artemis saw that, his pupils constricted slightly. His voice trembling, he inquired, “A-Are you

not going to use anesthesia?”

Bailey snickered mockingly. “Weren't you impressively brave earlier, going all out to flirt? Yet, you're

now afraid of a fine needle?”

Left with no retort, Artemis lay on the bed on his front without uttering a single word.

She's quite vengeful, isn't she? I picked on her just now, so she's now seizing the opportunity to torture

me, huh? Fine, then. I deserve it since I asked for it.

Sneering, Bailey stabbed the needle right into the man after threading the suture.

It went right through his flesh, and she could sense him stiffening at once.

“How's it? Is it still bearable?”

Cursing inwardly, Artemis replied in a calm and relaxed voice, “Yeah, it's like the bite of an ant.”

“Really?” Bailey quirked an eyebrow and stated airily, “To prevent you from moving about and opening

your wound again, Mr. Luther, I'll do a three-layer suture on both the top and bottom. It's not much, just

a hundred over stitches. Just enjoy the feeling of being bitten by an ant repeatedly.”

Artemis was rendered speechless.

For a moment, he couldn't breathe and almost passed out in fury.

Argh! What an evil woman!

At the Chivers residence the next day, the atmosphere in the living room was exceedingly depressing.

Tension hung thick in the air.

Edmund stood in the center amidst the couches with his head lowered, thinking about something or

other.

Felicity, on the other hand, sat across from him with wrath written all over her lovely face.

She glared at her nephew for a moment before slamming her hand on the coffee table. Following that,

the pot and cups on it wobbled.

“What are the lot of you trying to do? Will you all only be happy to see your grandfather die without

doing anything?”

Inclining his head a fraction, Edmund replied, “You exaggerate, Aunt Felicity. Grandpa is the person we

respect most, and he's also our role model. In fact, I'm willing to give up my life in exchange for his

longevity and well-being.”

“If that's the case, why do you repeatedly stop Dr. White from operating on your grandfather? Artemis is

another one. Even at this critical juncture, he's still in the mood to go abroad on a business trip! I don't

think you all have any regard for your grandfather. Otherwise, why would you all look so calm and

unruffled as though the matter has nothing to do with you?”

In response, Edmund sighed and explained mildly, “I object to having Dr. White perform Grandpa's

craniotomy because his treatment plan is too unreasonable. Besides, the success rate is too low. Aunt

Felicity, if we sign a liability waiver form with him, he won't need to take any responsibility even if the

operation fails. However, our loss will be tremendous. We might lose Grandpa just like that. Do you

understand?”

Glowering at him, Felicity demanded through gritted teeth, “What do you want, then? Even if someone

else were to perform the operation, the success rate would still be ten to twenty percent. How is it

different from Dr. White doing it?”

Edmund lifted his eyes and glanced at her. “I've found someone who can operate on Grandpa,” he

enunciated.
